The East Anglian School of Philosophy

The sculpture, or more accurately, relief, on the wall of the larger room
at 89 East Hill, Colchester was commissioned
by the School from Damien Fennell, a young artist currently with the
London School but also an old boy of East Anglia. It represents Damien’s
reflection on verse 73 of chapter 18 of Bhagavad Gita where Arjuna, having been
lifted from his despair by Sri Krishna, declares to his teacher “Destroyed is
delusion, and I have gained recognition through Thy Grace, O Achyuta. I am firm,
with doubts gone. I will do Thy word.” The translation is from the edition which includes Shankara’s commentary. Shankara
adds, in the commentary; “Recognition: of the
true nature of the Self. When this recognition is obtained, then will all the
ties of the heart be loosened.” Arjuna addresses Sri Krishna as “Achyuta”
literally “not fallen”; it means firm, imperishable. Sri Krishna is
addressed as such because he does not deviate from his divine state. Arjuna goes
on to say “I am firm”, because by surrendering all his limitations to the
limitless he becomes limitless himself. The commission was funded from a generous bequest made some time ago by Roy
Worton, a devoted member of
the School. Fineartcircle For those of us who have an interest, and have Internet access, Damien
Fennell has told us about www.finartcircle.com
which presents the work of four young artists from across the globe, Jonah
Caccioppe, Damien Fennell, Jonathan Freemantle and Dominic Medici. They form a
group that shares a passion for the expression of the human spirit in art. The
website has recently been updated with an extensive portfolio of their work,
exhibitions and other Fineartcircle initiatives. |
